In Stephen Jay Gould’s “Women’s Brains” he writes about a dispute that occurred in from the 1870’s over whether women were scientifically not as intelligent. Scientist Paul Broca presented research that women were scientifically less intelligent because of the smaller size of their brains. This was an article with a serious tone, and directed towards any audience willing to listen, especially those who think men are smarter than women. Throughout the research article, Gould presents other research that proves how Broca’s theory was wrong, and others who refute Broca. Logos is presented throughout the whole passage since it is an article refuting old research methods with new ones. While he does agree with the number s, Gould believes that his interpretation was wrong. One strategy seen is the rhetoric question. Questions such as “Had he not measured with the most scrupulous care and accuracy?” (Referring to Broca’s research) promote deeper thinking and understanding. Another rhetorical device seen is anecdotes. The author includes many little stories about the reactions to Broca and his research (like when he speaks about Broca’s offensive remarks towards women), which help deepen the story and provide more background information.
I didn’t really like this article because it made me angry. Although I enjoyed reading the research and reading about this argument centuries ago, it made me mad to think that people actually were so ignorant. I know they didn’t have as many accurate ways to measure intelligence back then, but maybe they should have double checked their experiments before making offensive comments about women. I think the author did a good job of trying to be unbiased in the article. This article is still relevant because some men still think women are not as smart. They should check out this research.

Here is an interesting video on how women and men have very similar brains.
