In Linnea Saukko’s satirical piece “How to Poison the Earth” she explains to the audience how to damage the earth and lists dangerous practices that people do. The purpose of this piece is to raise awareness of how the earth is being treated and encourage people to be more environmentally conscious. The tone of this passage is sarcastic and bitter, since it is clear that the author is unhappy with how the world is being taken care of. The most prominent rhetorical device seen in this passage is allusion. The author refers to specific events happening that are hurting the earth, such as dumping toxins into water and drilling for oil. The author also refers to the Environmental Protection Agency. These allusions not only create connections, but also logos since the EPA is referenced. Another rhetorical device applied is repetition. Throughout the entire piece, the author just repeats the different things that harm the environment. This is done on purpose to convince the audience of all the horrible things that are happening in the environment.
While I liked this piece and thought it was solid, I found a few flaws in it. First, the author exaggerates everything. It is normal to exaggerate in satire and create hyperbole, but this author just looked bitter. Being in AP Environmental Science, I agree that all of the things she mentioned were harmful, but she over exaggerated everything and made it a lot worse than it is. Most people do not just dump things in the ocean. I also thought this was one of those pieces that just went on too long. I was pretty bored of the examples by the end, and also fed up with that attitude.
